Finally...

After a long month (plus a few days), we will be having a "real" meal tomorrow afternoon.  I'm looking forward to enjoying the turkey that Janell has been preparing to cook yesterday and today.  Though, I won't be eating too much, since my body isn't used to large portions.  :)

This has been a challenging, yet great experience.  I feel like I've been able to get a small glimpse of what it would be like to actually have to survive having just enough food.  While we had a decent amount of variety, I can't imagine how much more challenging it would have been to have truly limited ourselves to just a couple of basic foods like so many people in the world are.

One of the toughest things for me was not so much the hunger, but the knowledge that this was a choice we were making.  I could have gone to Oberweis whenever I wanted to, but I had to choose not to (though I really wanted to).  I'm guessing that for people who are just thankful to have any food, there isn't quite as much longing for treats and special foods.  It's kind of tough to say for sure though...

One thing I do know is I am looking forward to not having any more pinto beans for quite a long time.  :)

  1. Congratulations, Andy and Janell. It's been fun and enlightening following along with you both on this journey, and I'll look forward to seeing where this takes you as you prepare for Honduras and beyond.
